Protect priority species without shutting down the site.
SkySentinel detects birds approaching your wind farm, tracks them in three dimensions and slows only the turbines they are heading for.
Animated 3D illustration of a wind farm on a ridge at dusk. Birds are tracked as glowing paths that change from pale to red as they approach a turbine. When a bird nears a turbine, that turbine slows to a stop, then returns to full speed once the bird has left.
Drag to look around the simulated site. Turbines turn red and slow down while a bird is in their zone.
Why per-turbine matters
Many wind farms in South Africa operate under environmental authorisations that require curtailment when priority species such as vultures and eagles are present. Done by hand, or with site-wide rules, that means stopping turbines that were never at risk.
SkySentinel replaces observer radio calls and blanket rules with a measured decision for each rotor. You stay inside your permit conditions and keep generating everywhere else on site.
How it works
- 1
Detect
Camera units on the turbine towers, with radar where the site calls for it, pick up birds as they approach.
- 2
Track in 3D
Each bird gets a position, altitude and heading, so the system knows where it is going, not just where it is.
- 3
Assess risk
Flight paths are projected forward against every rotor on site and scored by species and distance.
- 4
Curtail
Only the turbines in the bird’s path slow down, and only for as long as the bird is at risk.
- 5
Report
Every event is logged with video and flight data, ready for your environmental officer and the regulator.
What you get
- Per-turbine decisions
- A bird near one turbine stops that turbine, not the whole site. Everything else keeps generating.
- Species-aware
- Priority species from your environmental authorisation can carry their own distances and rules.
- Evidence you can hand over
- Event video, 3D flight tracks and curtailment logs export as reports for audits and compliance.
- Before and after construction
- Run it during pre-construction monitoring to map bird activity, then keep it for operations.
On site
- Camera units
- Tower-mounted, with pan, tilt and zoom to follow a target. Detection out to about 3 km.
- Radar
- Optional, for wide-area coverage and early warning on larger sites.
- Edge computing
- Detection and tracking run on site, so curtailment does not depend on an internet link.
- Turbine interface
- Integrates with the plant SCADA to send curtailment commands. Supported OEMs to be listed.
- Dashboard
- Event review with video, 3D tracks, downtime records and monthly reports.
